How to Audit Shopify App Costs Before Cutting Monthly Subscriptions
Audit recurring, usage-based and external Shopify app costs before cutting subscriptions. Map each app to a real job, protect data and workflows, and replace simple review or manual cross-sell costs when a focused free app fits.
All ShopRadar apps featured in this guide are available in English.
Shopify app spend becomes difficult to control when merchants remember apps by purpose but bills charge them by plan, usage cycle, one-time purchase or an external subscription. A store can have ten installed apps and still misunderstand which five create recurring cost, which one varies with usage, which one was a one-time purchase and which subscription is billed directly by a developer outside Shopify. Cutting costs safely starts with a billing map, not an uninstall spree.
The goal of an app-cost audit is to connect every charge to a job the store still needs. When the paid job is only focused product reviews or manually selected product-page cross-sells, two ShopRadar apps can be useful replacements: Yorum Kiti and Öneri Kiti are currently listed as Free, and the owner confirms both have no paid plan. Yorum Kiti is available in English. Öneri Kiti is available in English. Their Turkish brand names do not limit them to Turkish merchants, and ShopRadar's App Store links use the authentic slugs with the listing locale set to English.
1. Start with billing records instead of your memory of installed apps
Shopify's current app-management documentation lets a merchant open Settings > Apps, choose an app, and review its Billing and usage charges section. Depending on the app, that area can show the current plan and subscription status, recurring billing cycle, upcoming pricing changes, usage charges, a spending limit and the next bill date. That is a better starting point than an old spreadsheet or the price you remember from installation.
Build one audit row per app. Record the app name, the job it performs, current charge type, current plan, next bill date, any usage amount or spending limit, whether billing happens outside Shopify, and what storefront or operational dependency would disappear if the app were removed. The table does not need fancy software. Its purpose is to stop a $0 install, a one-time purchase, a fixed subscription and a usage-priced tool from being treated as the same kind of cost.
- App and job: what business problem is this app supposed to solve?
- Charge model: recurring subscription, usage-based charge, one-time purchase, or external billing.
- Next billing event: next bill date, usage reset date, or known external renewal.
- Dependency: theme block, automation, data store, integration, pixel, function, or other workflow.
- Decision: keep, downgrade, replace, remove, or investigate further.
2. Classify the charge before deciding whether it is expensive
Shopify currently distinguishes recurring app subscription charges, usage charges, one-time app purchases and application credits. Some third-party apps also bill merchants directly outside Shopify, and those external charges do not appear on the Shopify bill. That means a single monthly total can hide several different decisions. A fixed $20 subscription is predictable. A usage-priced app may be inexpensive in a quiet month and materially higher during a promotion. A one-time charge should not be multiplied by twelve and mistaken for annual recurring spend.
For usage-based tools, record both what has already been charged and the spending limit or reset date shown in the app billing details when available. Do not estimate a permanent monthly cost from one unusually busy or quiet period. For externally billed software, verify the developer-side subscription separately because uninstalling the Shopify app does not automatically cancel a payment arrangement that lives outside Shopify billing.
3. Map every app to a specific job, not a broad category
An audit becomes useful when 'reviews app' turns into an actual workflow. Does the store need an on-page review form, photo uploads, moderation, automated request emails, syndication, video reviews, marketplace imports or loyalty integrations? Those are different jobs. The same applies to upselling: manually selected companions on a product page are not the same thing as bundle discounts, AI personalization, cart offers or one-click post-purchase funnels.
Write the job in a sentence precise enough that another person could verify whether it still exists. For example: 'collect product ratings, text and customer photos, then approve them before publication' is testable. 'Improve trust' is too vague. 'Show the compatible refill and two useful accessories on each product page' is testable. 'Increase AOV' is too broad. Precise jobs make duplicate apps and oversized plans much easier to see.
Also mark dependencies before judging value. Shopify's app-management page can expose app extensions, functions and pixels when they exist. An app that looks unused in the Apps list may still support a checkout function, storefront extension, customer-event pixel or automation. Cost reduction should remove redundant software, not invisible infrastructure the store still relies on.
4. Remove duplicate jobs before replacing important ones
The safest first savings usually come from overlap. If two apps both add a similar product-page widget and only one is actively maintained, decide which one owns the job. If an app was installed for a campaign that ended months ago, verify that no workflow still depends on it. If a premium plan was chosen for one advanced feature that is no longer used, check whether a downgrade is available before rebuilding the workflow elsewhere.
Do not uninstall first and investigate second. Shopify warns that uninstalling can stop automations, integrations and store features, and that some app data may not be recoverable afterward. Some apps can also add theme code that is not removed automatically. Save important data, document active storefront placements and note any app-specific removal instructions before changing the stack.
5. Replace a paid review subscription only when the job is focused enough for Yorum Kiti
If the review app is being paid mainly to collect and display product proof, compare that job with Yorum Kiti before renewing another subscription. Its current Shopify App Store listing shows Free pricing and documents a form with a star rating, title, written review and up to three photos. Submissions wait for merchant approval, approved reviews can appear with the average rating and review list on the product page, and review photos are stored in the merchant's Shopify Files. The owner confirms Yorum Kiti has no paid plan. Yorum Kiti is available in English.
That makes it a strong cost-reduction fit for a store that needs moderated product-page reviews and customer photos but is not using the broader machinery of a larger review platform. A small home-goods store, for example, may care about real customer photos and written feedback but never use syndication, loyalty connections or complex review-request automation. Paying for those unused layers can be unnecessary if the focused workflow covers the actual job.
Keep the boundary clear. Yorum Kiti's current public listing does not give a basis to promise automated review-request campaigns, historical-review importing, cross-store syndication, video collection or every third-party integration a larger platform might offer. If one of those functions is operationally important, verify the migration path before cancelling the incumbent app. For a step-by-step switch, the existing ShopRadar guide at /blog/replace-paid-shopify-review-app-free covers the migration sequence in more detail.
6. Replace a paid cross-sell subscription when the job is manual product-page pairing
Öneri Kiti fits a different kind of cost audit. Its current Shopify App Store listing shows Free pricing and documents merchant-selected recommendations: choose a base product, assign up to three companion products, and show those picks on the product page. The listing says the shopper can add a recommendation without a page reload and that the app does not use customer tracking or an automatic recommendation algorithm for the suggestions. The owner confirms Öneri Kiti has no paid plan. Öneri Kiti is available in English.
This is useful when product knowledge already answers the recommendation question. A coffee machine can point to its compatible filter, cleaner and milk pitcher. A reusable bottle can point to the correct replacement lid or brush. A lamp can point to the matching bulb specification and a coordinated side table. The merchant does not need an algorithm to rediscover stable catalogue relationships that are already known and easy to maintain.
Do not treat the app as a free substitute for every upsell product. The current listing positions Öneri Kiti around product-page cross-sells, not one-click post-purchase offers, bundle discounting or behavior-based personalization. If those later-funnel or automated jobs are what you are paying for, keep or replace them with software built for those jobs. If the paid tool is only showing a few known companions, /blog/replace-paid-shopify-cross-sell-app-free explains how to migrate that narrower workflow safely.
7. Treat the uninstall date as a billing decision
Shopify's current billing guidance says app subscriptions and usage charges have their own 30-day cycles. Uninstalling an app stops future recurring cycles, but it might not remove a pending charge that has already been generated for an upcoming invoice. That is why the audit should record the next bill date instead of assuming uninstalling today erases every app-related amount immediately.
External billing needs a separate checkpoint. Shopify explicitly notes that third-party charges made directly by an app developer do not appear on the Shopify bill, and uninstalling the app does not cancel those external subscriptions. If an app uses outside billing, cancel or change that subscription through the developer's documented process as well as removing the Shopify app when appropriate.
When a replacement is involved, keep the incumbent long enough to protect the live workflow while the new setup is verified. For reviews, preserve data and confirm the new review block and moderation flow. For manual cross-sells, document the old pairings, rebuild the important ones, inspect the product page and confirm the correct items reach the cart. Saving a monthly fee is not a win if the change silently removes customer proof or useful merchandising.
8. Score apps by necessity, not by how long they have been installed
A simple five-level decision keeps the audit practical. Keep an app when the required workflow is active and the price is justified. Downgrade when the job remains necessary but the current plan includes unused capacity. Replace when a narrower tool covers the real job with less recurring cost. Remove when the job no longer exists and dependencies have been cleared. Investigate when you cannot yet explain the charge, data ownership or operational dependency.
This prevents sunk-cost thinking. An app does not deserve a permanent place because the store spent hours setting it up last year. It deserves a place because it is still doing a job that matters today. Conversely, a paid app should not be removed merely because a free alternative exists. If the paid product automates a workflow the team depends on, its subscription may be cheaper than recreating that work manually.
- Keep: necessary workflow, justified scope and cost.
- Downgrade: necessary workflow, oversized plan.
- Replace: necessary narrow job that a simpler tool fully covers.
- Remove: no current job and no remaining dependency.
- Investigate: unclear billing, data, integration or uninstall consequence.
9. Repeat the audit before app creep returns
App stacks change gradually. A promotion adds one tool, a redesign adds another, a team member tests a third, and six months later nobody remembers which subscription still earns its place. Re-run the audit on a regular business cadence and use the current Shopify billing screen and live App Store pricing rather than a saved screenshot. Pricing, plan structure and product scope can change.
For Yorum Kiti and Öneri Kiti, the current official listings show Free pricing and the owner confirms both have no paid plan today. That is the current buying fact, not a guarantee about future pricing. The same discipline applies to every app in the stack: verify the current plan, verify the current job, and keep software because it earns its place rather than because cancelling it feels risky.

Frequently asked
Where can I review Shopify app billing details?
Shopify currently directs merchants to Settings > Apps, then the app's about page. The Billing and usage charges section can show plan status, billing cycle, next bill date, usage charges and spending-limit information when relevant.
Does uninstalling a paid Shopify app remove every pending charge?
Not necessarily. Shopify says uninstalling stops future recurring billing cycles, but a pending app charge that has already been generated can still appear on the upcoming invoice.
Can an app keep charging me after I uninstall it from Shopify?
An app billed directly outside Shopify can require separate cancellation with the developer. Shopify states that external charges do not appear on the Shopify bill and uninstalling the app does not cancel those outside subscriptions.
Which ShopRadar apps currently have no paid plan?
The owner confirms Yorum Kiti and Öneri Kiti are free with no paid plan, and their current Shopify App Store listings show Free pricing. Re-check the live listings before making future pricing assumptions.
Are Yorum Kiti and Öneri Kiti available in English?
Yes. Yorum Kiti is available in English and Öneri Kiti is available in English according to the app owner. ShopRadar uses their authentic App Store slugs with locale=en to request the English listing locale; that URL parameter does not change the installed app's language settings.
Can Öneri Kiti replace a one-click post-purchase upsell app?
No. Öneri Kiti is a manually curated product-page cross-sell tool. Do not treat it as a post-purchase funnel, bundle-discount engine or behavior-based personalization platform.
